Great rooms, wonderful breakfasts and a fabulous welcome all await you at Polgassick Farmhouse in South East Cornwall, as featured in Alastair Sawday's special places to stay.

We will do everything possible to help you enjoy your stay with us. Our two guest rooms and dining room are completely separate from the rest of our house offering our guests a great deal of privacy.

We do not 'chuck you out' after breakfast - you are welcome to stay in and around the house all day if you like. Both rooms are very tastefully decorated and have en suite bathrooms, one with a bath and a shower, the other with a large walk-in shower and dressing area.

One of the rooms can be adapted to sleep a family of four. You may come and go as you please with hot drinks and fresh milk available at all times.

Rooms

Cast iron double bed in Bretton Room
The Bretton Room

We have two super double rooms, Bretton & Kernow. Kernow (Cornish for Cornwall) is a large room with a king size double bed. It has a walk in ensuite shower room which you access through a separate dressing area. We can also add two single beds or a single and a travelcot to Kernow to make it a family room.

Whilst both rooms are centrally heated, Kernow also has a log effect wood burner to give it a very cosy feel in the chilly months.

Bretton is a very pretty room with a cast iron double bed and vaulted ceilings. The lovely garden can be accessed directly from the room via old farmhouse steps. It has an ensuite bathroom with bath and separate shower.

We use luxury Egyptian cotton linen and feather duvets and pillows, with lots of fluffy towels. If your stay extends beyond three nights we change the bedding and the towels. Shampoo, conditioner and shower gel are provided along with other basics that you may have forgotten (toothbrushes, moisturiser, cotton buds etc).

Both rooms have flat screen wall mounted TVs with free view. Hairdryers and shaving adaptors are provided. We offer complimentary Cornish water, both still and sparkling. There is also reading matter by the loos!

Breakfast

Deli breakfast platterBreakfast is normally served between 8.00am and 9.00am, however we are happy to discuss breakfast times with you on your arrival and will provide breakfast outside these times should you require.

We pride ourselves on our breakfasts which are either traditional Cornish fry-ups or a lovely breakfast platter using fabulous Cornish produce of charcuterie, cheese, fruit, artisan bread etc. Any special dietary requirements can be catered for, and we are happy to cook anything else you’d prefer (within reason!). For special occasions we can provide a champagne breakfast of, for example, Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon on English muffins with a glass (or two) of fizz, please ask.

Beverages

You are welcome to help yourselves to hot drinks and biscuits at any time. Fresh milk is available at all times.

Should you wish for something stronger, there are beers, wines and Prosecco available, all available for a 'donation' that you leave in the 'booze jar'!

Garden and grounds

Steps leading into the gardenYou are more than welcome to use the very pretty back garden at anytime. If you are in the Bretton room, you can use the steps directly down from the side door of the room. There is an attractive pond in the garden with a water feature so anyone staying with children/pets must take responsibility for their safety.

We also have two paddocks opposite the house which are great for giving dogs a run in (if you have one) ... if not you are very welcome to borrow ours! We also have a set of full size rugby posts, if you fancy emulating Jonny Wilkinson.

Pets

Sebastian

If you have a dog, you are welcome to walk them in our paddocks to the front of the property. There are also some fantastic dog walks around the area and between October and April most of the beaches locally allow dogs. Par beach, just a few miles from Polgassick, allow dogs all year round.

We too have pets - a bouncy Retriever called Sebby and a posh looking cat called Harry. All are very friendly but if you don’t get on with animals we will do everything possible to keep them out of your way!

Eating in or out

Sams on the Beach, PolkerrisWhilst our accommodation is on a B&B basis, sometimes we are happy to provide an evening meal (not a la carte but tasty and hearty) by previous agreement. Failing that we have some great pubs and restaurants nearby. They cater for all tastes from pub grub to fine dining. We have tried most of them so please ask and we will give you the low-down.

If you wish to have a drink, we are happy to drive you to a local pub or restaurant and you get a taxi back.

Duchy of Cornwall Nursery’s new café owned by HRH Prince Charles is a great new addition to the area serving good quality lunches and teas, with a great view overlooking the ancient castle.

We think that Bellamama deli in Fore Street is the best deli ever and that opinion has nothing to do with the fact that we used to own it! It supplies a great range of charcuterie, cheese, fruit, artisan bread, take out food, fantastic sandwiches, pies, quiches and pasties. In our opinion they serve the best coffee in town!

Should you want a picnic for a day out we will be more than happy to discuss it with you.

Lostwithiel

LostwithielWe are just a mile outside of the lovely town of Lostwithiel, which is fast becoming a 'destination spot'. There is a wealth of independent retailers and the town is renowned for its antique/lifestyle shops.

You can walk to Lostwithiel 'the back way' from Polgassick which will take about 40 minutes on the way down and a little longer on the way back depending on how many drinks you’ve had!

If you are going into Lostwithiel in the evening, we are happy to drive you to a local pub or restaurant and you get a taxi back. All the local eateries have the local taxi numbers, or we will try and book it for you. We are also happy to book a table for you. The town is great to mooch about in, and has a fascinating history.

Eden project

Eden ProjectThe world famous Eden Project is hugely popular all year round and located just 3 miles away from Lostwithiel. Two vast artificial biomes have been created in a reclaimed clay-mining pit housing a tropical rainforest in one biome (the largest greenhouse in the world) and a Mediterranean environment in the other biome.

There's much more to the Eden Project than the biomes: world famous architecture and art, drawing inspiration from nature, in The Core building, interactive displays to educate and inspire, workshops, demonstrations and many other sights and activities to enjoy. It's an ideal destination for families with children as there are great facilities, a huge site to explore and plenty of places to grab a snack or a full meal.

In the summer the Eden Project is home to the Eden Sessions for intimate concerts with world class bands. Visit the Eden Project website to see what's on at the moment.

Cornwall

Cornwall beach with kayaksThere is so much to see and do in Cornwall that we could write about it forever.

We supply numerous leaflets in the rooms and we will happily discuss some of the must-dos with you over breakfast. The local Tourist Office is very helpful and you can book fasttrack tickets for The Eden Project there. There are magnificent gardens around and many National Trust places to visit, such as Lanhydrock country house just a few miles away.

If you like walking The Saints Way is just a few hundred yards from Polgassick, linking the North Coast with the South. The Hall Walk in Fowey is considered one of the top ten walks in England! Should you come back with wet gear that you would like drying please ask and you are welcome to leave muddy wellies/boots etc. in our barns.

The Camel Trail cycle track is also great fun to do, and if you bring your own bikes we can house them in our outbuildings, otherwise there are places locally to rent bikes. Lostwithiel Golf & Country Club is only a mile or so away and they are happy for guests to play. Fishing permits are available from the Post Office in town, the local fishing is very good. Badminton, squash and tennis courts are all available locally and the White River cinema in St Austell shows all the latest films.
